A study by Keeper Security , a leading provider of password protection solutions, has revealed that we still have a long way to go when it comes to cybersecurity conversations. The alarming finding: a third of parents have never spoken to their children about this vital topic.

The Unnoticed Danger: Cybersecurity in Education

In a world where our children are seamlessly immersed in the digital universe, parents are challenged more than ever. But are they up to the new dangers of the Internet? The answer is a disturbing no. The study, “Parental Practices Report: Conversations on Cybersecurity,” reveals troubling facts that affect us all.

Where is the problem?

A shocking finding of the study is that almost a third of parents (30%) have never discussed cybersecurity with their children. This is more than just a statistic. They are missed opportunities to prepare our children for a digital world that ranges from uncertain terrain to dangerous depths.

Insecurity in Parents: Passwords and Sex Education

The study also shows that many parents feel unsafe when it comes to talking about cybersecurity. Surprisingly, 57% of parents surveyed worldwide said they find it easier to talk about password security than sex education. Only 16% feel more confident about the latter topic. The uncertainty in these two key areas is alarming and shows the urgent need to enlighten our parenting.

Gender roles and responsibility

An interesting nuance emerged from the study: Although fathers reported being more comfortable having conversations about cybersecurity than mothers, it is ultimately mothers who are having most of these conversations. Globally, 56% of parents said mothers are responsible for talking to their children about cybersecurity, while 52% said fathers are responsible. A discrepancy is evident in the US, where 62% of parents said mothers have primary responsibility.

The alarming reality: Younger children without guidance

Of particular concern is the fact that 30% of parents say they don't talk to their children about internet safety at all. This is especially true for younger children who are exposed to the Internet without guidance. 44% of them own mobile phones and 46% have online gaming accounts. These numbers raise the question of how we can protect our children if we don't even make them aware of the dangers.

Regional differences and schools as salvation

The study also showed regional differences in parents' attitudes towards internet safety. In France, conversations about internet safety were the least common (34%), while in Germany 73% of parents had such conversations. In the UK, 40% of parents relied on schools to educate their children, compared to just 21% in the US.

The threat of insecure passwords

Another alarming finding is the knowledge gap regarding password security. Only 45% of parents believe their children ages 8 to 11 are capable of creating strong passwords. Parents with inadequate password security knowledge still allow their children access to their devices, posing a potential risk.

Conclusion and urgent need for action

The results of this study are a wake-up call for parents, educators and society as a whole. In the digital age, where our children are constantly online, we have to take responsibility. It’s time to make cybersecurity a central part of education. Schools and parents must work together to prepare our children for the digital world that will shape our future.

At a time when ignorance is no longer an excuse, we must act. Because cybersecurity is not an option – it is a necessity. Let's protect our children before it's too late.
