This is reported by the online magazine Telepolis, citing diplomatic circles in Brussels. Accordingly, Polish diplomats have apparently become the target of so-called spear phishing attacks in two cases.

According to the EU source, emails were repeatedly sent using the name of a Polish diplomat from Warsaw's Permanent Mission to the EU in order to carry out a cyber attack and allegedly infiltrate systems in the EU diplomatic apparatus. The Permanent Representation of Poland in Brussels called on the other member states to exercise greater caution and to closely examine email traffic.

As Telepolis further reports, in the most recent case the fictitious emails, with the name of a diplomat, were sent from an external account in several waves and to an increasingly larger group of recipients. Additional links were also added through which malware could possibly have been downloaded. The case is currently being examined by Polish security authorities, especially since the Foreign Ministry in Warsaw is also affected in a second case.

In so-called spear phishing attacks, recipients are targeted with detailed email messages. This requires that the senders scout the target in advance and research details in order to give the messages a certain level of credibility.

Last week, the AFP news agency reported that the parliaments in Poland and Slovakia had become the target of cyber attacks. The attacks came from several directions, “including from the Russian Federation,” the agency quoted a spokesman for the Polish Senate as saying.
