A sharepic depicts Tagesspiegel editor Malte Lehming. Next to it is a fairly long text, an unusually long text for a sharepic.

This text contains the demographic tensions between foreign youth gangs, their dynamics and passive seniors. The final summary on this sharepic reads: “Better a few young, foreign intensive perpetrators than an army of old, intensely passive natives.”

The content of this sharepic is not a misquote, but an excerpt from an article in the Tagesspiegel from 2010. Malte Lehming, named in the sharepic, was also the author of this article.

The article was published on November 16, 2010 under the title “Mental retirement home – youth gangs and demographics” and can be found online here Important to understand the content: This is a text from the Tagesspiegel “Opinion” category. According to the Tagesspiegel, Malte Lehming headed the opinion page until October 2016.

In terms of content, the author deliberately creates a contrasting picture between an undynamic, aging, passive society and a young, wild and definitely aggressive society. This is also the intended means, which is intended to make the article interesting and dramatic for the readership. A provoked reversal of thought patterns.

Addendum from the Tagesspiegel

The article from 2010 has been used again and again over the past few months, even over the past two years. According to the Tagesspiegel, comments were necessary in order not to misinterpret the content, but also the author. The original content is now followed by the following explanatory extension:

PS: An addendum in March 2017. Since its publication in November 2010, this text has triggered waves of indignation at irregular intervals to this day. Perhaps a few comments will be helpful. The author rejects any form of violence. When punishing criminals, he advocates applying the full force of the law. In his opinion, supposed cultural peculiarities do not reduce the culpability of delinquents. The subject of the text is neither terrorist organizations nor thugs. Analogies, for example, to the mass murderer at Breitscheidplatz or to forms of pure physical violence therefore miss the point and go nowhere. As the extensively discussed example of “West Side Story” shows, it is exclusively about mentality characteristics of mostly young immigrant groups, which are called “urban youth gangs” in integration research. Their members come together primarily to offer their “peer group” protection in their new home. Claims are defended against other “urban youth gangs” and territories are staked out. Various biographies show that belonging to such “urban youth gangs” does not rule out a later professional career in the civil society sector. The text appeared under the heading “Counterpoint”. This signals to the attentive reader that an unfamiliar, strange, perhaps even disturbing perspective is being deliberately adopted.
