Ever heard of a wolf in sheep's clothing? This is exactly what we could be talking about in cyberattacks, especially if the wolf is disguised as a simple PDF document.
A PDF is harmless, right?
It was always reassuring to open a familiar file format like the PDF. We are used to trusting them. But security experts at JPCERT have now uncovered an insidious trick that calls this familiarity into question. An ordinary-looking PDF with a harmful surprise inside: an embedded Word file full of malware .
The clever camouflage: This is how the malware escapes detection
If you open the file in question, you don't end up in the familiar Adobe Reader, but in Word. The element of surprise? The malware, hidden in the Word file, is executed and the user remains unaware. And the virus scanner? He happily waves the PDF through because he only sees a normal document, no trace of the hidden Word danger.
Be careful with email attachments
JPCERT keeps details about what type of malware is installed via the compromised files under wraps. But the message is clear: double-thinking is better than sorry. It is no longer enough to hold off on emails from unknown addresses. Now every attachment, even the most innocuous PDF, must be questioned.
Conclusion: An informed user is a safe user
The cyber world is a constant game of cat and mouse. While security experts work to protect us from such attacks, hackers are always one step ahead. It's important to stay informed and always be skeptical. Don't be fooled by a familiar file extension!
