Did this man lose both arms and hands because of a dog kiss?
This report received many questions as to whether this could be true.

On the site APost , a platform run by Social Sweethearts GmbH that runs various sites with emotional or viral stories, there is a report about an American to whom this is said to have happened.
In short: Yes, that's true!
Greg Manteufel actually only had flu-like symptoms, but he became so ill so quickly that his wife took him to the hospital with impaired consciousness and a high fever. During the ride, he developed bruises all over his body that he had not had before the five-minute ride. Greg had particularly severe sepsis that threatened his life.
After a week in the hospital, with high doses of antibiotics to save his life, he had to have both legs and both hands amputated to save his life due to thrombi in the blood vessels that were causing his limbs to die. This was successful, but the patient paid a high price for it.
But why did this all happen so quickly?
Greg Manteufel has been infected with Capnocytophaga canimorsus , a bacterium that is found in the mouth and saliva of almost every dog and cat.
Greg had eight dogs at the time. It could not be clarified from which he caught this disease.
Normally this bacterium is harmless to humans, but in rare cases, when it enters the bloodstream, it can cause this particularly serious form of sepsis (blood poisoning) ( Low, Greenwood: Capnocytophaga canimorsus: infection, septicaemia, recovery and reconstruction ).
These cases are very, very rare but do occur, but what is much less rare is the fact that dog and especially cat bites can become infected very quickly and can then (in the worst case scenario) lead to the loss of limbs.
Here is an example from my own family
My husband was bitten by our cat, just a tiny injury:

The so-called “loops” are there to move them through the wound in the disinfectant bath in order to clean it from the inside.
A completely harmless but deep bite can have the most serious consequences. My husband was very lucky because he has a wife who is a professional. It is not uncommon for such injuries to end in amputation.

So, always go to the doctor quickly and insist on antibiotic treatment , because even my medical colleagues often don't know how quickly a bite like this can become extremely dangerous. My husband went to the family doctor and he didn't recognize the danger.
Despite professional treatment, such wounds quickly become dangerous volcanoes. The day before, the family doctor had not yet recognized that this needed to be treated urgently - so if in doubt, always take the responsibility of the family doctor yourself.

A year and a half later, this is what this wound looks like today and has completely healed:

In summary, it can be said that an infection as bad as Greg Manteufel's is very, very rare.
And even rarer if this only occurs through licking. But infections from bite wounds are very common and are often underestimated, even by human doctors.
No bite injury, no matter how small, should be taken lightly, otherwise this very shoulder may quickly disappear!
