Security researchers at Check Point Research (CPR), the specialist division of Check Point Software Technologies , are currently observing how advertisements calling for donations for Ukraine are increasing on the Dark Net. There are some honest ones among them, but many of the advertisements are fraudulent and are simply intended to line the pockets of the masterminds.
Dark Net transactions often in cryptocurrencies
As is often the case with transactions on the Dark Net, the transactions here also take place in crypto currencies such as Bitcoin. Donations should be processed anonymously via the blockchain. The Dark Net itself cannot be accessed via conventional search engines. You need special, anonymized browsers to access it.
CPR specifically warns against donating this way because cyber criminals want to capitalize on the public's interest in the Russo-Ukrainian war. CPR's investigation shows that some of these sites are even part of the Ukrainian government's official fundraising campaign, while others appear questionable and cause concern.
“CPR has always taken a close look at the Dark Net. Now, as the war between Russia and Ukraine intensifies, donation fraudsters are popping up there. These ads use fake names and stories to trick people into donating. At the same time, there are legitimate donation advertisements for the Ukrainians, of which we show an example in which over eleven million euros were collected. There are both legitimate and fraudulent advertisements on the Dark Net. I therefore strongly recommend that all donors only use truly trustworthy sources and media. CPR will monitor the Dark Net throughout the war and report any such misconduct.”
