Find true love on Facebook?

As derStandard , CNBC and Spiegel report, the new dating system for Facebook users is intended to find a long-term partner and prevent cheap pick-up lines.

However, the social media giant is currently only testing the portal in Colombia and can be found somewhat hidden in the existing mobile app. It cannot be accessed via the desktop version.

Ad-free and safe from penis pictures

The dating area is ad-free and not tied to paid premium features. All adult users can create a special profile - only the first name and age would be taken from the actual Facebook profile.

You then have to answer up to 20 questions. These are intended to later serve as an introduction to the conversation and include questions such as: “What does a perfect day look like for you?”

Users of the dating function can upload up to a dozen photos and provide additional voluntary information about height, job, education and religion. In addition to “man” and “woman”, gender statements such as “transgender” and “non-binary” are also possible.

For the time being, the dating portal is intended to bring together people who are within a maximum radius of 100 kilometers. Users have to enter their city and Facebook uses GPS to check whether the information makes sense.

If you receive a request from an interested person, you have the option to ignore it. The other person is then not allowed to ask any more questions. Contact is limited to text and emojis - so users are initially safe from recording various genitals.

Who is eligible?

When looking for the right partner, the software filters out your own friends and blocked contacts.

The situation is different with friends of friends: mutual friends, matching page likes and similarities between profiles form the basis. It can happen that your ex-partner (if he has not been blocked) appears in the search results.

Facebook is distancing itself from an oversupply that can be sorted out with a swipe, “Tinder” style. It should definitely be about potential life partners and it should be made clear to the user that there are people behind the profile pictures and consideration counts more than pure impulse.

“The goal is to make Facebook the best place to start a relationship online,”

explains product manager Nathan Sharp to Techcrunch .

It remains to be seen whether Facebook can keep its promise of high data protection standards for its dating portal.

Nevertheless, the huge mountain of data that the company has accumulated could be a decisive reason for it to successfully mediate and prevail against the competition.
