The President of the German Medical Association, Klaus Reinhardt, is calling for a permanent ban on firecrackers on New Year's Eve. Reinhardt told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ):

Had good experiences with the firecracker ban

“We have had good experiences with a ban on firecrackers over the past two years. Now the federal and state governments should decide on a permanent and comprehensive ban.” the “unregulated racket” no longer fits the times. “It is bad for the environment and climate and repeatedly leads to serious injuries ,” argues Reinhard.

Every year around 8,000 people in Germany suffer an injury to their inner ear from exploding fireworks. Children, teenagers and young adults between the ages of six and 25 are particularly often affected by blast trauma. In addition, there are injuries to the eyes and burns. “ This means a strong additional burden on the employees in the clinics, who have already been working at the limit for months ,” said the NOZ medical director.

In recent years, private fireworks displays have been banned due to the corona pandemic. Reinhard now called it “completely out of place to greet the New Year with rockets while a war is raging in Europe . “For many refugees from war zones, the New Year's Eve shooting triggers bad feelings, some even fearing death. Instead of spending money on firecrackers and rockets, I would prefer a fundraising fireworks display for these people.”
