As is well known, brazen con artists try to get their hands on the savings of their chosen victims every day. They rely increasingly on today's online communication and hide in the anonymity of the Internet. The Bamberg criminal police currently have two new cases on the table - a completed love scam and an unsuccessful attempt at contact by a supposed daughter.

First of all, the unfortunately completed case of the so-called romance scam

A 48-year-old woman from the Bamberg district received a friend request on Facebook at the beginning of the year, but not from just anyone - a famous Spanish-German pop singer had noticed her profile. You wrote a lot about the messenger services that are part of the platform. The celebrity quickly covered the lady with gay declarations of love. But it didn't stop there.

After some time, without ever having had personal contact, he asked her for a favor. He had gotten into financial difficulties and needed money. He would pay her back quickly, or so the pop singer wrote. The woman from the Bamberg district was helpful and paid several sums using digital gift cards (Steam cards).

Over the months, the transfers made in this way added up to around 10,000 euros. The stories about why the famous pop star needed a financial injection became more and more adventurous. Most recently, he claimed that a six-figure sum was on the way to his “loved one” and that only fees were due for customs and luggage shipping.

The only truth in the case, however, is that the 48-year-old fell for a love scammer. When she finally realized it, she confided in the police.

A simple way to protect yourself against fraudsters – direct contact!

Demands for money from unknown numbers or people you've never seen? There's another way to deal with this other than opening your wallet in a gullible manner. A 65-year-old proved this on Sunday evening.

She was contacted by a number she did not recognize on the WhatsApp messenger service. “Hello mom, this is my new number!” Using the well-known scam and the legend that the cell phone had broken and that financial support was needed quickly or an urgent transfer had to be made, the crooks also tried to target the clever woman from the Forchheim district.

However, she couldn't be bothered at all and insisted on a simple trick: " Without a personal call, you won't get anything from me!" With this news, the fraudsters were now at a dead end. The route out of anonymity was too risky and the lie would have been exposed in the telephone conversation anyway. They broke off contact. The 65-year-old then went to the police, who more than welcomed the lady's behavior.
