Deep Fake – a term that causes fear in many people. One immediately thinks of manipulation, deception or propaganda. But that doesn't always have to be the case!

The summary of the amusing deep fake video with Sebastian Kurz:

A video appeared on YouTube in which the Austrian Chancellor is supposedly seen singing. However, it is a deep fake video, which of course is not meant seriously.

Deep fakes are often fake videos that can hardly be distinguished from real videos in terms of quality. As a rule, you can see prominent people in these videos.

What if a deep fake like this is actually really amusing? Not only amusing, but of course also recognizable in its style. This is exactly what is happening in the case of Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz at the Song Contest.

I mean, one or two people might be able to trust him with such a sweet song that he can use to soften the hearts of all mothers-in-law. But we as fact checkers have to say clearly: This is a fake!

The video can be found on YouTube in the channel called “Kurt Fleisch”. The description for this is:

Original: Thomas Forstner (Eurovision 1989 Austria)

FOSS used: DeepFaceLab and Blender (for mic tracking & masking)

#sebastiankurz #thomasforstner #deepfake #DeepFaceLab

It remains unclear whether this is ultimately the producer of the fake.

The crux of the matter is the deep fake

But deep fakes are not always amusing - especially when fraudsters try to blackmail or put words in someone's mouth that they never said.

The original voice is still different from the person's actual voice at the moment, but how many people actually have the voice of Mark Zuckerberg or Keanu Reeves in their head?

What certainly no one thought possible 25 years ago when the film was released is now possible for any user, provided they have the appropriate hardware, enough photos and the right programs: create their own deep fakes!

With the corresponding number of pictures that naturally exist of celebrities, some more or less good fake porn with celebrities has already been posted online on relevant sites.

How can I recognize these fakes?

The skin color of the face and the rest of the body often don't really match,
the teeth also look unrealistic and there is often no blinking because computers are very difficult at calculating a wink.
The voice is also different from the person's actual voice.
Researchers at the University of Albany are developing software that is designed to detect deep fakes in real time.
