Back in 2019, there was a security breach in a backup of music streaming provider Deezer, which was published by a third-party partner and then further distributed on a popular hacker forum.

Have I Been Pwned writes on Twitter:
“At Deezer, 229 million unique email addresses were cracked from a 2019 backup and shared online at the end of 2022. The data included users’ names, IPs, dates of birth, genders and location.”

Statement from Deezer

The music streaming service itself confirms this incident and writes that it was only noticed in November 2022. A user on the Breached hacking forums posted a sample of data from 5 million users on November 6, 2022. He also claims to have data from over 240 million users and wants to sell it.

The collaboration with the third-party provider that caused this violation was terminated in 2020. The breach of data security resulted in the disclosure of non-sensitive user data. Passwords or payment details should not be compromised.

All security systems remain in effect, but it is recommended that you change your password.

Deezer explained to Restore Privacy

“We take this incident very seriously and are currently working with the French data protection authorities to confirm the source of the incident and take all necessary measures.”
