The World Cup has been running in Russia since June 14, 2018 and our animals can't quite understand the enthusiasm.

Team member Anke is a veterinarian and knows very well the problems our four-legged friends face during such large celebrations. With these tips, we can help support our pets when they are frightened by banging and loud growling:

Of course it's great that the German team is taking part in the World Cup in Russia to defend their title, but this poses some problems for dog owners in Germany.

Unfortunately, people now celebrate extensively with firecrackers and rockets , especially when the German team scores goals.

So we have the same problems in the middle of the year as at the turn of the year.

Our dogs have four times better hearing than humans, so loud noises like this are stressful for the animals anyway.

Dogs can't understand why there's a bang and why everyone is suddenly cheering! This scares many dogs a lot.

What can you do?

Comfort your animal calmly and gently. Speak in a calm voice and establish physical contact, such as stroking. It is important not to calm or pet the animal excessively, as this increases the fear (master has to calm me down, so something is really wrong here!). It's all about the right amount.

Slowing down a little and remaining calm is the best prerequisite for a relaxed dog, even if the situation is loud and wild. Talking to the animal calmly and lovingly, stroking it and being with it definitely helps.

It is advisable to take to a quieter place let perform tricks or commands - which he knows how to do - This conveys security to the animal and also shows it that it is not a dangerous situation (if I have to “sit” and “down” here, it can’t be that bad!).

I don't think sedatives make that much sense as they can possibly increase the anxiety and the WM is too long for sufficiently good treatment.

Tellington Touch (TTouch) can also be helpful for very anxious dogs : circular movements on the skin and stroking of the ears have a calming effect. Touch circles are performed with the fingertips or the heel of the hand. You move your hand in a 1 1/4 circle and then move your hand and start a new circle (also works on humans).

Tellington touch in dogs:

If your dog is not prone to diarrhea when stressed, you can also give him food to fill up before the game (a full stomach also has a calming effect ).

You can also put the dog in a separate, slightly darker room and music play there at a steady rhythm (same principle as with puppies and the alarm clock!).

When going for walks, make sure that the dog is properly secured on the leash, as a sudden bang and cheer can scare the calmest dog and he will be gone.

The most important thing at the end:

Stay calm and calm yourself, you will show your dog that there is no danger!

Otherwise, I wish all football fans a nice and successful World Cup!

PS:

avoid firecrackers and rockets and to show that you can think for yourself, because it's not just dogs who are afraid, but also children and old people (as they could feel like they're being transported back to war); There are good reasons why fireworks are banned outside of New Year's Eve and approved major events.
