The number of cyberattacks caused by malware, viruses or other malicious software continues to rise.

Cyber attacks: At the same time, current research by the Association of German Website Operators (FdWB) shows that almost 80 percent of all websites have deficiencies in technical security requirements and legal regulations. The FdWB has therefore launched a new program for the certification of websites, which functions as a quality, security and legal standard.

“The International Website Trust Standard (IWTS) is the first comprehensive testing procedure carried out by an independent, state-accredited certification body,” explains Dr. habil. Rainer Friedel, managing director of the Control Union Academy, who helped develop the new standard. The comprehensive testing criteria are determined by the FdWB, the testing procedure is carried out by the certification body.

The audit and certification is carried out by Control Union Certifications Germany GmbH - based on the test criteria developed by the FdWB. “The FdWB program creates trust among users and end consumers. That’s why we entered into a cooperation with the trade association,” says Markus Fertig, managing director of the certification body.

The total of 42 test criteria are assigned to one of four areas:

Cyber security, data protection, ownership and identification obligations and user-friendliness. “Only those who can demonstrate conformity for all 42 test criteria receive a seal. We help website operators understand the requirements of their sites and implement them independently,” says Holger Harte, Managing Director of the FdWB. The trade association also supports website operators in integrating the seal in collaboration with participating IT service providers. After receiving the seal, which can be placed prominently on the website, monitoring will ensure that quality and safety are maintained.

An initial website check is free, followed by certification starting at 390 euros - depending on the size of the company and the scope of the website. “It's about establishing criteria that meet the important safety requirements. This also applies particularly to small and micro-enterprises, as these websites have the greatest deficits,” explains FdWB managing director Michael Turko. “Costs should not be an obstacle to security.” Further information can be found on the websites of the IWTS standard and the Association of German Website Operators.
