Digital checking cards: The fraudsters’ scam

Increasing digitalization brings with it a variety of advantages, but unfortunately these developments are not only used by honest citizens. Criminals are using increasingly sophisticated methods to obtain bank customers’ sensitive data. There is currently a wave of phishing emails and SMSs in circulation that target customers of Volksbank Köln Bonn and other financial institutions.

The fraudulent messages feign urgency by talking about a sudden blocking, a necessary verification or a change in the law. They ask the recipient to click a link that leads to a fake but authentic-looking website. There, customers are supposed to enter their real access data for online banking - a dangerous mistake.

Consequences of fraud

If the data is transmitted to criminals in this way, it can subsequently be used to commit further fraudulent crimes. The fraudsters often then contact their victims using the phone numbers stored in online banking, pretend to be bank employees and thus obtain a transaction number (TAN).

Equipped with the stolen data and the TAN, the perpetrators can now register their own mobile phones as digital debit cards and withdraw cash or make purchases without contact. The fraud is often only noticed when the account is already empty.

Warnings and tips for caution

The Bonn police and the Volksbank Köln Bonn have therefore issued a joint warning. They urge their customers to be careful and adhere to their bank's guidelines. This includes:

  • Accessing the web address for online banking directly, not via search engines.
  • Enter the access data only on the official online banking page.
  • A skeptical approach to incoming emails that look like they come from the bank.

What banks will never do

It should be noted that banks will never ask their customers for personal information such as PIN or account number via email, SMS or telephone. They will also never include online banking links in emails or SMS messages or request refunds. When you call, you will never be put under any time or psychological pressure and will always be given the opportunity to call back.

How you can protect yourself

If you receive a suspicious email, do not click on the links or open any file attachments. Do not give out sensitive data over the phone and do not allow yourself to be tricked into giving your PIN or (push) TAN to alleged bank employees or police officers.

If in doubt, you should clarify such requests with real customer support. If you notice unauthorized debits on your account, act immediately and contact your bank. Also, file a police report.

Stay up to date on current phishing alerts and recommendations. Your safety should always come first. In the digital world: always be vigilant and careful. It's better to over-examine an email or phone call than to fall victim to a scam.
