Eight out of ten digital companies (84 percent) stated in a survey by the digital association Bitkom that they expected an increased threat situation in cyberspace. Two thirds (67 percent) of companies expected this in the future, and a further 17 percent were already seeing concrete signs of this. According to Bitkom, the results of the survey of 100 companies are not representative, but they do provide a meaningful initial picture of the mood, it was said when the results were presented.

The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine is also being waged in cyberspace - and German digital companies expect that the effects will also be felt here.

  • Two thirds (67 percent) assume that the threat situation in cyberspace will worsen.
  • Another 17 percent already see concrete signs of this.
  • One in three companies (34 percent) ramped up their IT protection measures at short notice.

These are the results of a survey by the digital association Bitkom, in which 100 companies in the digital industry took part. The results are not representative, but provide a meaningful initial impression of the mood.

“All companies should definitely check their protection against cyber attacks and strengthen them where necessary. It is no secret that Russia and government-affiliated groups have such capabilities. Given the dynamic developments surrounding the war against Ukraine, companies should definitely take the risks seriously and strengthen their own cyber resilience. In addition, the ongoing threats posed by cybercriminals from all over the world should not be neglected. Against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, criminal free riders will try to take advantage of the opportunity and, for example, offer themselves as supposed helpers in times of need.”

Bitkom President Achim Berg

So far, one in three companies in the digital sector (34 percent) have tightened their IT security measures due to the war, and another 7 percent have firmly planned to do so. This is still being discussed in 3 out of 10 companies (30 percent) - and around one in four (23 percent) sees no need for additional IT security.

In response to the war in Ukraine, one in three companies (33 percent) set up a crisis team or created clear responsibilities within the company. Responsibility usually lies with the management or board of directors (22 percent), less often with another division of the company (11 percent).

Bitkom has put together five measures that every company should urgently take now to better protect themselves from a possible cyber attack, which be accessed here .

Note on methodology: The information is based on a survey that Bitkom Research conducted on behalf of the digital association Bitkom. Between March 3 and 7, 2022, 100 companies in the digital industry were surveyed online
