This year's nationwide Digital Day on June 16th is dedicated to digital participation. Exchanging ideas with others online, booking tickets via app or understanding artificial intelligence like ChatGPT: three out of five people in Germany (60 percent) want to participate more in digital life. The desire is particularly great among older people aged 75 and over (67 percent). But among younger people between 16 and 29, more than half also want more digital participation (55 percent). This is shown by a representative survey commissioned by the “Digital for All” initiative among more than 1,000 people in Germany aged 16 and over.

“Those who want to participate in social life can hardly avoid the digital world these days,” says Kimberly Klebolte, managing director of the “Digital for All” initiative. “So that we leave no one behind in this development, we need the joint commitment of politics, business and civil society.”

There are many reasons for a lack of digital participation

Too insecure, too complicated, too expensive: There are many reasons why certain digital devices and applications are not used. At the top of the list is concern about the security of one's own data (64 percent). Almost four out of ten (38 percent) find it too complicated to use and three out of ten (29 percent) lack technical knowledge. Around a fifth are also afraid of doing something wrong (20 percent) or don't know where to get support if they have questions or problems (22 percent).

For some, digital participation is also a financial challenge: one in eight (12 percent) simply cannot afford the devices and applications. “Digital participation fails primarily because of uncertainty, a lack of knowledge and a lack of access – not because of the will or because people do not recognize the benefits of digitalization,” says Klebolte.

Only two percent say they have no interest in digital technologies and therefore avoid them. Together we have to allay fears, strengthen digital skills for life and make digital access easier.”
