In a representative study by the digital association Bitkom among 1,002 people aged 16 and over in Germany, their digital skills were analyzed.
Internet use
88 percent of Germans used the Internet within the last three months. Among those under 50, practically everyone uses the Internet (100 percent). Among 50 to 64 year olds it is still 94 percent. There are fewer and fewer in the age groups above: 65 percent of those aged 65 to 74 were online in the last three months - and 58 percent of those aged 75 and older.
Send emails
Almost all Internet users are also able to send emails. This makes this basic digital competence the top priority. 94 percent generally feel capable of doing so; this figure is high in all age groups.
Internet research
How can I find the information I'm looking for online? 90 percent of Internet users think they know how to do this. The generation under 50 has the highest number, 95 percent. 90 percent of 50 to 64 year olds can use search engines. For older people it is three quarters (64-74 year olds: 75 percent; aged 75 and over: 77 percent).
Make video calls
During the Corona pandemic, private video calls experienced rapid popularity. Today, around two thirds of internet users (68 percent) say they know how to make video calls. As is often the case, the younger the more experienced.
80 percent of 16 to 29 year olds, 71 percent of 30 to 49 year olds, 69 percent of 50 to 64 year olds, 58 percent of 65 to 74 year olds and 45 percent of 75 year olds and older know how to make a video call.
Set up devices
New printer, new smartphone, new PC – almost every device has to be set up before use. For whom does this usually work on their own? Overall, 56 percent of Internet users can set up their devices themselves.
However, seniors in particular often fail to do this: only 15 percent of people aged 75 and older are able to take care of setting up technical devices themselves.
Digital Day on June 16th
This year's Digital Day on June 16th will focus on digital skills. The over 1,500 registered events are primarily about reducing fear of contact, shedding light on the data jungle and teaching how to use digital offerings safely. Bitkom is involved in Digital Day as a partner.
“The vast majority of people in Germany use digital technologies as a matter of course - but for many people, digitalization is happening too quickly and they cannot keep up with developments. We must therefore improve the teaching of digital and media skills from childhood to old age.”
Bitkom President Achim Berg
The spectrum of nationwide offerings on Digital Day ranges from workshops, seminars and dialogue events to open days. Digital Day is supported by the “Digital for All” initiative – a broad alliance of 28 organizations from civil society, culture, science, business, welfare and the public sector. The common goal of the initiative is to promote digital participation in Germany.
