A few years ago this method was still unlikely, but unfortunately it is now very easy to do: digital theft with a reader.

Technology that is supposed to make paying more convenient is making it possible: Since many people use their cash cards for contactless payments so that they don't have to enter a PIN at the checkout, this opens up opportunities for criminals that were rather difficult a few years ago and were not very promising, but unfortunately are now much too simple.
Digital theft with an NFC reader is now shockingly simple, as a SWR report shows, which was re-uploaded and shared on Facebook, but can be legally viewed on YouTube:

Is this a new method?

No, as early as 2014, the website “ Business Insider ” reported that the Dutch Payments Association was warning against this method. At that time, however, there were no documented cases of this; the method was only being tested and classified as a possible future method by criminals.

In 2016, there was said to have been at least one case in Great Britain 13 online purchases within three days . However, the readers only deduct money, not purchase it immediately, which is why it is This case appears to have been more of a credit card fraud, in which the criminals obtained the victim's data through a phishing site.

2019

Three years ago, this method required a lot of effort because the devices were not so easy to obtain and the distribution of cards that enable cashless payments was not yet so widespread.
However, things are now looking different: the card readers are available online for around 30 euros, and amounts of up to 25 euros can usually be debited without any PIN entry or signature. A diligent “digital pickpocket” can make good money in a busy pedestrian zone!

How can I protect myself from this?

If amounts have obviously been debited unlawfully, banks are generally accommodating enough to refund the money. You can also apply to the bank for a maximum amount that can be debited from your credit card per day via NFC or deactivate the NFC chip completely. This is often also possible via online banking.

To be on the safe side, you can also buy an RFID protective cover for your credit cards, which shields the credit cards from the radio waves from the reading devices.
