The further development of digitalization in Germany is threatened with a setback. For 94 percent of companies, the topic has become more important due to the pandemic, but 95 percent expect that disrupted supply chains, inflation (92 percent) and uncertainty regarding energy supplies as a result of the war in Ukraine (78 percent) will now influence digital change slow down. This is shown by a survey by the digital association BITKOM among 604 companies in Germany.
Digital against crises
The need to expand digitalization is undisputed. Two thirds (69 percent) of companies assume that in five years digital business models will be very important or even crucial for their own economic success.
“Digitalization is the best means of resistance and resilience to crises of all kinds,” says BITKOM President Achim Berg.
According to the survey, four out of ten companies will invest more in digital change in 2022 than in 2021, 28 percent of which will invest more, 15 percent even significantly more. 31 percent keep investments stable. And 17 percent tend to cut back on spending, and five percent even cut it significantly. In 2023, however, companies want to put more pressure on investment. Then only two percent want to spend significantly more on digitalization, 16 percent want to spend more.
Restraint noticeable
But 19 percent want to invest less in digitalization, and 14 percent even want to invest significantly less. 42 percent want to leave spending unchanged compared to the current year.
“The economic conditions are deteriorating and are also putting pressure on companies,” said Berg.
The view of the German economy as a whole is critical. Only two percent of companies see Germany as a global leader in digitalization, while 24 percent see the economy in the top group. But a third (36 percent) see Germany in the middle field, 27 percent among the laggards and eight percent even as lagging behind.
