Clinics fear bottlenecks in patient care and are reacting to theft of hygiene products.
Disinfectants and respiratory masks have been stolen from several Berlin clinics. – The most important thing at the beginning:
Thieves have currently stolen highly sought-after hygiene products in several clinics. A doctor fears impacts on patient care. The clinics are taking measures to combat thefts.
Disinfectants, respiratory masks and protective clothing were stolen
Unidentified people stole large quantities of disinfectant, respiratory masks, gloves and protective clothing from several clinics in Berlin.
A children's intensive care unit, where children with serious cancer are cared for, is also affected. A doctor at the Charité now fears impacts on patient care. The Charité press office announced that internal precautions have now been taken to ensure that there is no repeat.

Just masks for the weekend
A doctor from the Charité told rbb that respiratory masks had been stolen from a truck delivery.
Failure to deliver new masks quickly could impact patient care. A spokeswoman for the Charité corrected this statement and stated that a roll container was stolen, but it did not contain any respiratory masks. The theft was reported.
When asked to what extent the thefts would have an impact on patient care in the children's intensive care unit, the spokeswoman explained that supplies are currently still sufficient. One is also prepared to react to bottlenecks.
Protective material is becoming scarce in all clinics
Municipal Vivantes clinics are also affected. The press office stated that disinfectants and protective masks were stolen and that employees were asked to be careful. Due to nationwide delivery difficulties, the protective material would gradually become scarce.
“Employees are required to ensure the resource-saving use of disposable items such as masks, gowns or protective goggles,” says the press office.
The Berlin DRK clinics have already taken further precautions. The publicly accessible dispensers for disinfectants are now only filled with soap. Unknown people had previously filled disinfectant into containers they had brought with them. The containers were even completely removed from public toilets.
Respirators and disinfectants sold out
In many Berlin pharmacies, protective items such as respiratory masks and disinfectants are sold out.
Wholesalers of respiratory masks complain about delivery difficulties. You can get respiratory masks at exorbitant prices in online shops. A 24-year-old told the online magazine bento that he had speculated on the Corona panic in January and bought large quantities of respiratory masks. He sold these in his online shop for more than 20 euros each. The purchase price was less than 60 cents per piece.

Stories like this may be contributing to the fact that these sought-after items are now being stolen from clinics. The Federal Ministry of Health has already announced that there is no scientific evidence that a face mask reduces the risk of infection with the corona virus.
