A good half of Americans would delete themselves from the Internet, assuming that were possible. 47 percent do not trust the Internet. 46 percent also see no reason for their name to appear on the Internet. And 42 percent fear that they will one day be hacked. This is shown by a new internet user survey by the VPN provider NordVPN .

Some of the study participants went even further. 18 percent wish there was no Internet and eight percent don't even use it. 1,002 people took part in the survey.

Money is a private matter

More than half of Americans would like their personal financial information to be deleted from the Internet. Other information that should be removed includes embarrassing moments at 26 percent, along with old dating profiles or old social media accounts. This is followed by unflattering photos and videos at 24 percent, as well as previous professional career at 23 percent.

Social media accounts ranked first when it came to career research data, with 22 percent agreeing, followed by 16 percent agreeing to career path information. At 53 percent, rejection of financial information is very high. This is followed at some distance by rejection of medical information at 35 percent and personal messages and emails at 34 percent. When asked what participants wanted to know about others, 41 percent said they wanted to know about a criminal history.

Privacy can come at a cost

Of all those participants who say they would pay for online anonymity, 31 percent are willing to pay up to $100 (around €93) for it. Twelve percent agree at $101 to $500 and three percent would even pay more than $1,000 to remain anonymous on the Internet.

NordVPN says this data shows that people are beginning to understand the importance of online anonymity and security.
