Cyber criminals impersonate DocuSign via email to spread malware, warns our cooperation partner Watchlist Internet .

What's in the email?

The fraudsters claim that the recipients have received a secure document to sign and ask them to open a link or an attachment. “You have received a secure document to review and sign,” it says, for example. Some of the emails contain additional text. For example:

Hi Guys,
We hope you find this letter well.

We recently noticed that you have yet to view an invoice that is due for payment. To make it easier for you to view and pay your invoice, we have created a unique HTML code that will download and view the invoice on your computer. Password: XXXXXX

Thank you so much,

Good Day,

Please find proposed document information for your attention.

Let me know if you have any questions Please use Docusign secure link to download the document.

Best regards

What happens next?

The emails have nothing to do with the DocuSign company. Rather, the name is used to give you the illusion of seriousness and to trick you into downloading a malicious file. In some emails we know this is done by clicking on a link; in other emails an infected Word document is sent directly.

After opening the Word document, you must activate so-called macros by clicking on “Enable Content” or “Activate Content”. As soon as this click is made, the malware is downloaded in the background.

What's particularly sneaky is that nothing happens after that. At least nothing that would be visible to you. Because in the background, a malicious script gains access to your system and thus also to your passwords (e.g. from social media accounts or your bank accounts) - without you noticing.

How do you protect yourself from malware?

  • Check the return address! Does the email actually come from DocuSign? Is the sender trustworthy? Before opening attachments or clicking on links, you should check the sender address. The following applies here: Be skeptical about messages from strangers or unusual messages from acquaintances.
  • Question the content! Have you requested a document? If you don't know about a document you are supposed to sign, delete the email.
  • Use firewall and antivirus program and keep them up to date! Most operating systems offer built-in protection measures. In order for these to work, you should keep your operating system up to date. In general, you should update your operating system and programs as quickly as possible so that known security gaps are closed.

In this article you will find more tips to protect yourself from malware!

Have you installed the DocuSign malware?

If you have installed the malware at work, contact the IT department. Run a virus scan immediately and remove the malware. In the article What to do if my device has been infected with malware? Watchlist Internet shows you how to do this.

Removing malware is challenging. If in doubt, get support from experts.
