A donkey with an Israeli flag painted on it - a photo that has been circulating on social networks for years.

The donkey is said to have been stoned and/or burned after it was put on display. Is that correct?

It's about this photo here, which is currently being shared again on Facebook:

This donkey was led through the streets by the Palestinians for public amusement, then stoned and when it could no longer walk, burned alive!!
Animal rights activists!!
Will you open your mouth here too or would you rather remain silent?!
Or is that just “their tradition”?

The fact check

The photo was last year (2018) along with another photo showing a donkey lying on the ground and burning. The story was similar: first a donkey with the Israeli flag was put on display and then burned.

The two photos have nothing to do with each other. They weren't even recorded in the same year. The requested photo with the painted flag is from 2011. The photo with the burning donkey is from 2014.

The accompanying text reads:

Unfortunately, it is unclear what became of the donkey. Whether he died or not is not clear.

Conclusion

The photo is from 2011 - in earlier versions it was circulated together with a second photo from 2014. The story that the donkey was burned after being put on display cannot be proven or confirmed.

It is unclear what became of the animal.

Unfortunately, this story continues to persist on social media platforms and is often used for hate speech.
