The fact check

The Central Franconia Police Headquarters announced the following in a press release:

On Thursday (March 5th, 2020) the Turkish-Islamic community in Röthenbach ad Pegnitz (Lkrs. Nuremberger Land) received a threatening letter. The Schwabach criminal police have started investigating this incident.

Members of the affected mosque community based on Bahnhofsplatz informed the police in the evening hours. A letter addressed to the community threatens its members with the words “You will never be safe!” A cartridge was also enclosed with the letter.

The letter was seized by the police and immediately forwarded to the responsible specialist department at the Schwabach criminal police. In the meantime, a forensic examination of the letter has been initiated and an assessment of the content of the letter has been carried out.

In their initial assessment, the investigators from the Schwabach criminal police assume that the current letter can be classified as part of an existing series of similar threat letters. Since December 2019, police state security officers in Schwabach have been investigating several similar cases. Corresponding threatening letters, some of which were accompanied by cartridges, were sent to people in regional political life. Some of these letters also included cartridges, which until now were genuine ammunition.

The criminal investigation into this series of threats is in full swing. An investigative commission (EKO) has been set up for this purpose since the beginning of December 2019. Eight officers are currently working intensively to investigate the series of threats.

Regardless of the criminal investigations, the police headquarters and its police officers are particularly aware of the current security situation. The police respond to such threat scenarios with appropriate measures adapted to the situation. The Central Franconian police are in close contact with affected organizations and people.
