As geo.de reports, there is a connection between heavy rainfall and increasing fish mortality. So do these animals die by drowning?
As the summer heat increases and the frequency of thunderstorms increases, more dead animals float on the surface of the water. Thunderstorms, heavy rain and floods not only affect the land, but also the affected waters and not every aquatic creature can deal with such a sudden change.
Lack of oxygen causes fish to die
The increased water masses that rain down on the earth during heavy thunderstorms and rainfall can quickly lead to the storage capacity of the sewer system being exhausted, especially in cities. The dirty and unfiltered water ends up in nearby bodies of water and pollutes them, which can lead to an additional drop in oxygen levels.
Microorganisms take oxygen from the water in order to decompose the organic substances supplied. Since the oxygen content in warmed waters is already very low, the fish no longer get enough oxygen and suffocate painfully.
