In the last few days, the topic of alcohol and truck drivers has come back into discussion, especially through a report on Stern TV. It is not a new problem and it is also a complex problem.

The most important thing about truck drivers and alcohol in brief:

Accidents involving trucks in which alcohol was involved occur again and again. According to media reports and also the police, drivers from Eastern Europe who have to work under difficult conditions are particularly noticeable.

And again the police have taken a drunken driver from Eastern Europe out of traffic: On February 18, 2020, the Schweich police motorway station was reported to have seen a truck driving conspicuously on the A1 motorway in the direction of Saarbrücken. The vehicle was subjected to a traffic check at the Hetzerath motorway rest area, whereby the driver smelled alcohol

Where others have already been lying down for a long time, this driver was still working with his truck: the subsequent breath alcohol test showed a value of 2.87 per mille. A criminal complaint for drunk driving was opened against the 48-year-old Eastern European and a blood sample was taken for criminal proceedings.

Also on Monday, February 17, 2020, a road user reported to the police that a truck driver was probably drunk. The truck (trailer truck) was stopped and checked by the radio patrol onschulenberger Straße in Zellerfeld around 7 p.m.

The alcohol test on the 39-year-old driver showed 1.72 per mille. A blood sample was ordered, the driver's license was confiscated and criminal proceedings were initiated for drunk driving. The tractor-trailer was reparked by a towing service driver and picked up by employees of the transport company on February 18, 2020.

Truck drivers and alcohol in the media

The last Stern TV issue from February 13, 2020 was specifically about drunk truck drivers. It also highlights again and again how difficult everyday working life is for drivers, especially for Eastern European drivers. It is not entirely unimportant to know under what conditions drivers work. Stern TV describes the post on YouTube:

How many drivers are really drunk on Germany's motorways?

There's no doubt that truck drivers lead hard lives. During their often involuntary forced breaks at motorway service stations, many people turn to alcohol - to the point of binge drinking. Stern TV accompanied a police alcohol check on Sunday night.

Alcohol is a general problem

Alcohol and traffic: Even as children, you should know that participants in traffic should not be under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Aside from professional drivers, whose vehicles pose a deadly threat if not under control, many other road users also underestimate the influence of alcohol.

Police press releases regularly reveal accidents that occurred under the influence of alcohol. There are new cases being published every day. There can therefore only be one solution: no driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs!
