At the beginning of January, Danilo Trijic's heating suddenly stayed cold. An internet search landed him on the website of “Haustechnik Seibel” in Stuttgart. Trijic says he called and said it wasn't an emergency and that he wanted an appointment during normal working hours. A few hours later the doorbell rang. A craftsman was standing in front of it.

The craftsman cannot repair the damage!

“He then immediately went to the gas boiler and tried to practically open the panel of the gas boiler, but he was unable to do so. Yes, he just complained, 'Everything is too tight here!'." The craftsman then discovered that a certain part was missing - so he couldn't fix the error. Nevertheless, Danilo Trijic should pay.

No repair, but a bill for 527 euros

There is no mention of any Seibel company from Stuttgart on the receipt he receives. Instead, the letterhead says “Haustechnick AS” from Hanover. Technick written with “ck”. The bill is tough. He will be charged an emergency response fee of 299 euros. And that despite the fact that he explicitly didn't want an emergency operation.

In addition, there are travel costs of 69 euros and the working time: 74.90 per quarter hour started! Danilo Trijic should pay a total of around 527 euros. Immediately on site, in cash or with EC card.

He says he felt pressured and paid. Benjamin Stillner is a lawyer for e-commerce and consumer protection law. He finds clear words for the high price: “I would classify that as immorality. If it happens intentionally, then it is punishable.”

How to choose trustworthy tradesmen?

If the heating fails, the toilet is clogged or you are locked out, you are grateful for any support. But be careful: dubious companies and tradesmen agencies can take advantage of such emergencies. Here are some tips for encountering reputable tradesmen:

  • The best way to prepare is to create a list of important handyman contacts before an emergency occurs.
  • You can usually get a good recommendation from your friends and acquaintances: ask whether anyone has had positive experiences with tradesmen.
  • Alternatively, you can search for craft businesses in business directories or via the respective guild. Be sure to choose a company that is actually based in your area.
  • Find out about the costs of an emergency response and how you can reach the company outside of business hours.
  • The Baden-Württemberg consumer advice center has helpful advice on online craftsman portals .
  • If you are presented with a grossly inflated bill from a tradesman, do not allow yourself to be pressured into paying it immediately and possibly in cash. Once the money is gone, it can be difficult to get it back. If in doubt, contact the police.
