Various posts appear more and more frequently in Facebook groups that obviously have nothing to do with the actual topic of the group. More common in public, mostly unmoderated or only slightly moderated groups with a high number of members. These posts are uninteresting for the users of the groups and are often quite annoying.
But what is the goal behind these contributions?
To do this, you have to take a closer look at a group like this and maybe dig a little deeper.
The groups are literally overwhelmed with these contributions. Posts or links are shared or posted from different profiles. The people behind the profiles know one thing for sure: If a Facebook group no longer has an admin, this position will eventually be offered to the users who are most active in the group.
If a group does not have admins, Facebook may suggest a group member as an admin. This proposal is based on numerous signals that we take into account when making our decision. These include factors such as current participation in the group or whether a person is already an admin of another group on Facebook. Facebook can archive a group if it doesn't have an admin for a long time.
Facebook Help Center: What should you consider if there are no administrators in a Facebook group?
And that seems to be exactly the goal of these profiles, they flood the group with random posts in order to be able to take over the group at some point. Because Facebook does not differentiate according to the content or quality of the posts and, if a group no longer has an admin, at some point it simply offers administration to the users who participate the most.
Once this person is an admin, the group often gets a different name. In order to attract even more people, the title of one or more television series/programs is often used, for example with the addition of “Preview”.
There is a strategy behind this to acquire groups with many members. These are then used, for example, to distribute your own content. Links to external sites are often posted here.
How do I recognize a group that has already been taken over?
On the one hand, of course, because of the many dubious posts, and on the other hand, you can also see who is the admin for each group. A very important indication that a group has been taken over is if it has recently radically changed its name.
You can see all of this via the group info. You can find this in a small box on the right, or on your mobile device by tapping on the name of the group.
