It is the second discontinuation of an email service that can also be used for communication with authorities this year: Telekom switched off De-Mail for economic reasons on August 31st Mail for private customers of Deutsche Post.
In 2010, e-mail was intended to be an alternative to classic e-mail: private individuals, companies and authorities should use the service to communicate encrypted and with unique identities. At the end of 2019, the feature was discontinued due to lack of success.
Postal customers had to register in person, which could then be used as proof of identity, ensuring that an email really came from a specific sender and not from a fraudster posing as the person. This also made it possible to transmit confidential letters and documents without worry.
Another novelty was the transmission of digital e-mail via analogue means. If the addressee does not have a registered e-mail, emails could also be printed out and sent in paper form - which, at least in the case of emails with integrated links, seemed rather unintentionally strange, since a "click" on the link on paper doesn't really do anything.
What does this mean for private and business customers?
E-Post private customers now have just under three months to back up their E-Post letters and documents. Instructions can be found HERE . The E-Postscan, with which customers can view their mail scanned by the post office, will be continued on a new platform.
Deutsche Post now recommends using its own postal and DHL app or the email providers GMX and Web.de, where conventional paper letters can be sent from a new online office.
However, nothing will change for business customers: e-mail will be “continued unchanged and further expanded” for them.
