The claim

It is doubted that a flippantly worded job advertisement from Edeka is really genuine.

Our conclusion

The advertisement is real, the store manager wanted to distinguish the job advertisement from the usual job advertisements with the wording “with a wink”.

Chain stores and brands are integrating more and more into social media with often humorous posts, be it Kaufland , Dr. Oetker or Der Wollny with the (Edeka) supermarket . But if flippant internet humor is suddenly used “offline”, it can cause confusion - and lead to questions from us as to whether that job advertisement from an Edeka store is really real.

The Edeka job advertisement

This photo of the photographed job advertisement is circulating on social media:

The job advertisement from an Edeka market

In the job advertisement, the market manager, Mr. Gebhardt, is looking for an employee for the beverage market and begins somewhat mockingly with “(m/f/d/ … etc. etc.)” when mentioning the genders. Further requirements are listed, for example:

  • “You’re not completely screwed?”
  • “You can tell a case of beer from a case of water?”
  • “Are you able to grease a sandwich in the morning?”
  • “You don’t have to celebrate a week sick at the slightest scratch in your throat?”
  • “You can read the clock and say “hello” and “goodbye” in a friendly manner?”

We asked: The ad is real!

Our colleague Elke wanted to know more and asked the Edeka market by phone on September 17th. She was confirmed that the ad is indeed real. When asked whether previous employees had been so terrible and that was why such a special text was written, the answer she received was “ Yes, there should be something different here now ”.

BuzzFeed also asked and was told that Mr. Gebhardt did not want to criticize or discriminate against anyone with the job advertisement. He simply wanted to attract attention with a wink, said Edeka spokeswoman Kerstin Holla.

Old text, newly edited

However, the text of the Edeka job advertisement is not entirely new, as a very similar text could already be read in a job advertisement on the Essen job exchange in 2018:

A job advertisement from 2018

Conclusion

Despite the humorous text, a “taste” remains, because one point in it is critical, especially during the pandemic: “ You don’t have to celebrate a week sick at the slightest scratch in your throat .” Since a scratchy throat can also be a symptom of COVID-19, this could also be understood as a request to come to work even if you have corona disease.

However, the Edeka ad is real, and according to the Edeka spokeswoman told BuzzFeed, the number of applicants was significantly higher than for their normal job advertisements. So it may be too “cheeky” for some people, but it seems to have been successful.

Also interesting:
No, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) does not hire extras - it is false news.
“Extras m/f”: The BAMF job advertisement does not become more true through repetition
