What that means and how it works.
In its own newsroom, Facebook has now published that articles can now be marked as breaking news on Facebook. Facebook writes:
People use Facebook to find information that is relevant to them. We know: they also want more access to breaking news from sources they trust in their News Feed. Our experience working with media and publishers as part of the Facebook Journalism Project also shows that many media companies would like more support in labeling breaking news.
That's why we ran a test over the last few months that allowed over 100 news organizations around the world to mark stories on Facebook as "breaking news." We found that people interact more actively with these messages. Our partners in Germany saw an increase in various parameters related to breaking news between June and September. This includes outgoing clicks (+7.1%), reading time (+6.4%), interactions (+3.8%) and sharing of these messages (+17.6%).
This label is now visible to everyone in Germany as well as Australia, France, Mexico, Spain and the United Kingdom. We will also expand the test to other countries in Europe and Asia.
Specifically, media have the following options:
- Instant articles, mobile and web links, and Facebook Live videos can be marked as “breaking news.”
- The marking can be used once a day and you can also determine how long a post should remain marked as “breaking news” (up to 6 hours).
- Additionally, five labels are available per month.
- Further information about these posts can be viewed in the Facebook page statistics.
All of these stories will also be marked as “breaking news” on CrowdTangle , and we are considering using the flag in the News Feed rankings in these countries as a signal that the stories are fresh.
Readers can give us feedback if they do not consider a story to be “breaking news.” This feedback will help us evolve the way we display breaking news.
