Winter is coming, it's getting dark outside. Burglars are particularly active in the twilight phase of the day.
“Burglars only come in the dark” – an unfortunately common belief that is no longer true. A lot of burglaries happen at dusk.
Late fall and winter are naturally darker seasons, making break-ins easier.

The good news: You can protect yourself and make it as difficult as possible for burglars. Whether motion detectors, climbing over protection or tidy premises, there are various ways to reduce the risk of a break-in.
The police provide tips on how to prevent nightfall.
- Lots of light, both indoors and outdoors, deters potential
burglars. - When leaving the house/apartment,
leave the light on in a room. If you are away for a longer period of time, use timers and
program different switch-on times for the evening hours. - Install motion detectors and bright lighting outside so that
the light switches on when someone approaches the house, and especially
illuminate basement exits and wall niches well. - Switch off external sockets, they can also be used by perpetrators.
- Only ventilate when you are at home, because a tilted window is like
an open window for a perpetrator and is very easy to overcome (despite locked window handles).
Attention - insurance companies do not pay because there is no break-in, but possibly just
normal theft! - With a door viewer and sufficient lighting, you can see whether
uninvited guests are ringing at your door.

- With intercom systems: Do not immediately open the front door to everyone,
but first find out about the person and the reason for the visit. - Always lock all windows and doors, even if you are away for a short time.
- A bar lock on the entrance door or an alarm system provides very
effective protection against potential burglars. - Avoid
hiding your keys under the doormat or in flower pots. - Keep only a small amount of cash at home. Leave your valuables
in a safe at your bank (not in the mailboxes). - Neighborhood help: Keep in regular contact with your neighbors. This way you know
what's going on in your neighborhood and identify any unusual activity
immediately. Also exchange telephone numbers; if necessary, it is good
to be able to notify the neighbor. - When fencing your property, avoid trees, shrubs and bushes -
they offer ideal privacy for thieves. Walls and fences, on the other hand, are
obstacles that the thief cannot easily overcome without being noticed (at least
cut back the bushes to a maximum height of 80 cm - Ladders, garden furniture and tools lying around are practical helpers for
thieves - they should be kept locked inside the house. - The more solid the fence, the greater the security.
- Provide a fence or wall with climbing protection.
