The rising electricity prices and cost of living are worrying many people, and for others this energy crisis offers further opportunities to stir up anger among the population.
Meaningful memes are making their rounds on social media, reinforcing the assumption that Germany will once again win the World Cup. But are these claims actually true?

But the comparison is flawed
Since the cost of living and income differ greatly in different countries, global comparisons are weak. According to an analysis from 2021, the electricity price , adjusted for purchasing power, highest in Rwanda and Germany was no longer in first place even when it came to the absolute electricity price.
But comparing the absolute electricity price is not particularly useful either, as it is constantly changing and the current price comparison only represents a snapshot. In addition, other factors play an important role in pricing such as the energy tariff , the network usage tariff and political taxes .
If you take into account the purchasing power of different countries, the cards are reshuffled.
“Taking into account the comparatively high purchasing power, electricity prices in Germany are in 15th place worldwide.”

World champion in electricity prices
The assumptions are often based on a graphic illustration published Tech For Future The author also relies, among other things, on a source from the database “ German Electricity Price September 2020 Global Petrol Prices (2020) ”, whose data has now been updated. According to this, Germany was now in 4th place at the end of 2021, followed by the Cayman Islands, Denmark and Bermuda as the front runners. This development already became apparent in February 2022.

Germany at the G-20 summit
The title of world electricity price champion does not go to Germany. in a purchasing power-adjusted comparison among the G-20 countries, Germany easily climbs to the top and pushes itself to the top.

Conclusion:
With 31.8 cents per kilowatt hour of electricity, Germany is ahead of all other G-20 countries. In a global comparison and taking into account the comparatively high purchasing power, Germany is in 15th place.
