Do we need to explain what the eggplant mostly means as an emoji? So this purple fruit with a pretty distinct shape? If you don't know, congratulations because the Internet hasn't screwed you over yet. However, we strongly advise you not to use them when flirting in a chat!
With the impending release of Unicode 15.0 and a whole host of new emoji, it's the perfect time to release Adobe Future of Creativity: 2022 US Emoji Trend Report The results of the survey of 5,000 Americans shed light on when, why, and how Americans use emoji for self-expression and identity, diversity, equity and inclusion, dating and relationships, workplace communication, and more.
It's hard to imagine life without emojis
Text alone can be misleading because it is sometimes not entirely clear whether a person means a sentence seriously or sarcastically, for example, or whether someone is sad or happy about a circumstance. For this reason, the ever-growing number of emojis is an excellent aid in written communication.
The versatility of emoji offers endless ways to connect with one another as their meanings evolve and inclusivity increases. This often allows you to convey more than just words on a screen and create a deeper connection with others.
Emojis lighten up conversations
If you've ever experienced a cold sweat after receiving a text message without an emoji, you're not alone. It's no surprise that the vast majority (91 percent) of respondents use emoji to lighten up conversations.
There's nothing more impactful than a well-timed 😂, 👍, ❤️, 🤣, 😢 - the five most popular emoji in the USA. These playful pictograms even have the ability to benefit our overall mental health, as more than half (60 percent) of survey participants noted.
Emojis can improve your love life… or hinder it
The small pictograms also show that you are capable of certain emotions (which is not an everyday occurrence!). At the same time, you can also show that you are not necessarily the best match in terms of character, for example if you react to serious or sad topics with a laughing emoji, as is unfortunately all too often the case on Facebook.
The same applies to the world of partnerships and relationships.
Emojis have become a love language all their own and can make or break a first impression and ignite or extinguish a potential flame. To have a chance at romance, you should send the three emojis that make you more attractive to a new suitor: 😘, 🥰, or 😍.
And whatever you do, avoid the three emojis most likely to turn people off: 💩, 😠, and 🍆. Yes, the eggplant, especially when combined with 💦, is not well received.
The study found that even 32 percent of Generation Z (born 1997 to 2012) have ended a relationship with someone by using an emoji.
Emojis are also popular in work conversations
With many of us still working from home, there are people who haven't met their colleagues in person or haven't seen them in a long time. 68 percent of respondents not only said they like it when people use emoji at work, but also that it has a positive effect on likeability (69 percent) and credibility (59 percent). There may have been a time when emoji were considered unprofessional, but that is certainly no longer the case.
Especially in the world of work, it is often important to have a certain level of personal contact with colleagues in order to avoid misunderstandings, but you also cannot sit on a Zoom call for 8 hours. It's good when emojis help you distinguish a serious request from a joke with a laughing emoji.
Inclusive emojis promote togetherness
According to the survey, age, race/ethnicity, culture and disability are the top four categories of inclusive emojis that U.S. emoji users would like to see expanded.
As emojis continue to influence the world around us, 71 percent of respondents agree that inclusive emojis can help spark positive conversations about cultural and societal issues, while 75 percent agree that inclusive emojis can help raise awareness for different groups of people. Although there has been steady progress in recent years, 83 percent of people believe emojis should still provide more representation.
More compassion through emojis
Humans have a strong need for connection, belonging and community - we want to understand others and be understood ourselves. When we spend so much time behind screens, this desire becomes even greater, without the personal characteristics such as tone of voice, facial expressions and body language.
Emojis help bridge this gap by expressing what text on a screen cannot. The majority of emoji users in the US (88 percent) say they are more likely to feel compassion for someone when they use an emoji.
This presents an opportunity to overcome the limitations of language and hopefully lead us to a more compassionate future.
