Emotet is considered the “king of malware” – the banking Trojan is still one of the worst malware threats.

According to the Federal Office for Information Security, the Emotet Trojan has a “significant impact”. Together with Federal Minister Horst Seehofer, the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) points out that the threat from malware from the Internet remains high.

To protect yourself, the BSI recommends:

  1. Install security updates promptly.
  2. Use anti-virus software and update it regularly.
  3. Back up data regularly.
  4. Set up a separate user account for surfing and writing emails.
  5. Open email file attachments with caution.
  6. Check links contained in messages before clicking.

If your computer is infected with Emotet, it is best to restart your computer.

Information about Emotet

The Trojan reads contact relationships and email content from the mailboxes of infected systems. The perpetrators use this information to further spread the malicious program .

Here's how it works: Recipients receive emails with authentic-looking but fabricated content from senders they've recently been in contact with. Because the names and email addresses of the sender and recipient are correctly stated in the subject, salutation and signature, these messages appear authentic to many people. That's why they encourage people to carelessly open the malicious file attachment or the URL contained in the message.

Once the computer is infected, Emotet downloads additional malware , such as the banking Trojan Trickbot. These malware lead to data leakage or allow criminals to take complete control of the system. In several cases known to the BSI, this resulted in major production downtimes as entire company networks had to be rebuilt. For private users, an infection can mean the loss of data, especially important access data.

  • Inform those around you about the infection, as your email contacts are particularly at risk in this case.
  • Change all access data stored and entered on the affected system (for example in the web browser).
  • The malware sometimes makes profound (security-relevant) changes to the infected system. If your computer is infected with malware such as Emotet, the BSI recommends that you restart your computer.
