Huge amounts of spam appeared in March and April 2022, hundreds of times more in the first four months of the year compared to the last four months of 2021. The most affected were Word documents contaminated with infected macros. For this reason, Microsoft is tightening the security of macros in Office documents.

What does this mean for the infamous malware? The ESET experts explain this in their current article on WeLiveSecurity .

What is Emotet?

Emotet was first discovered in June 2014 as a banking Trojan and has since rapidly developed into a “crime-as-a-service” platform that sells access to compromised systems to other criminal groups.

Once the Emotet is running on a computer, it typically downloads and runs other types of malware such as Dridex, Gootkit, IcedId, Nymaim, Qbot, TrickBot, Ursnif and Zbot.
Emotet has a modular program structure with a main module that is distributed via extensive spam campaigns. The malicious program affects both private users and companies.
