The end of Windows 7 support is within reach. But what actually happens if I don't upgrade to Windows 10?

As PC Welt reports, Windows 7 users must expect consequences if they do not want to upgrade their operating system. Support for the operating system and the included Internet Explorer officially ends on January 14, 2020 . This means that from this point on, users of the outdated versions must expect that Microsoft will neither deliver updates nor close security gaps.

Users are being asked to switch to Windows 10 even though Win7 is still very popular. The previous model is said to still be in use by 27 percent of all Windows users, but especially in companies. Gamers also rely on the outdated operating system: According to Steam usage statistics, 34 percent. China offers a possible explanation here, because Windows 7 is the most common among users there - regardless of whether it is a legal or illegal version.

If Microsoft ends tomorrow, January 14, 2020, Google announced via a blog entry that the Chrome browser will continue to support Windows 7 until July 15, 2021. This is intended to give companies the time to switch to the current version without having to forego the use of a browser that is provided with security updates.

End of support is a “ticking time bomb”

Security experts at Eset describe the end of support for Windows 7 as a “ticking time bomb for private users and companies” in a press release The lack of support is particularly interesting for cyber criminals. However, in the event of a cyber attack, insurance companies could refuse to pay companies and private users due to an outdated operating system.

This means that Windows 7 users have to take the risk of not only being damaged by the data theft, but also possibly being left with the entire damage.

Eset therefore recommends:

“If a device cannot be updated to a current operating system, private users and companies should consult their insurer in order to prevent any problems in the event of damage.”

The security expert also points out the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which applies in the European Union, according to which companies must comply with the “state of the art” when it comes to processing and using personal data:

“Companies or even doctors and lawyers who process and store personal data are acting contrary to the EU GDPR if they continue to use Windows 7 or Server 2008. If personal data is stolen, the fine imposed by data protection officers would be correspondingly higher.”
