It hasn't been possible for a long time, now it's that time again: private celebrations, birthdays, but also festivals, folk festivals and the party scene are coming together, the dance into May is imminent. Attention and tips from the police also protect against dangers caused by alcohol, harassment or knockout drops.
Going out and partying is part of life for young people. Different people come together at many events - unfortunately not always with a peaceful outcome. Sometimes this can lead to harassment and physical arguments, especially due to high alcohol consumption.
Nobody has to put up with harassment and should defend themselves against attackers. But neither young women nor men should provoke perpetrators or try to protect themselves with pepper spray and other weapons. Instead, everyone in a serious situation should ask others for help and also show moral courage.
Tips for safe going out
- Look out for each other. It's best to go in a group and try to keep an eye on each other during the party.
- If you notice that a friend or acquaintance is particularly drunk, make sure you get home safely. Call him/her a taxi.
- Pay attention to your and those accompanying you's drinks. Do not leave them unattended.
- Protect yourself against harassment and unwanted physical contact – even from people you know. Make it clear that you will not tolerate this behavior.
- Ask others to help (friends, outsiders, or venue staff). Help others in serious situations.
- Contact the police immediately on 110 if you or others are threatened or attacked.
- Make sure you travel home safely: use public transport and taxis.
Particular caution is advised when celebrating in bars or discos, as so-called knockout drops are increasingly being mixed into young people's glasses. The drops are colorless and odorless and therefore cannot be tasted in the drink. Just 10 to 20 minutes after unknowingly ingesting it, victims experience nausea, dizziness and sudden sleepiness. Sexual predators then take advantage of their victims' weaknesses to rob or rape them. The victim wakes up later and can't remember anything.
Five tips to protect yourself from knockout drops
- Order drinks from the waitress and only accept them yourself.
- Do not accept open drinks from strangers.
- Do not leave drinks and food unattended.
- It's better to buy small amounts of drinks and finish your drinks before dancing or going to the toilet. If in doubt, order a new drink.
- If you feel strange, reach out to friends or staff and ask for help. Have someone you trust take you home or to a safe place.
