Save energy: thermostatic valves and economical heating controllers can reduce consumption
The time is ripe for urgent changes: The energy advice from the Bremen Consumer Center provides information on where the most energy can be saved - by doing it yourself and without major investments. This tip is dedicated to the topic of heating.
There are a variety of measures to save energy in the home.
“The highest energy consumption and costs arise in private households when heating.”
Raymond Krieger, energy consultant for the Bremen Consumer Center
Around 70 percent of the final energy is used to heat the living space. The consumer advice center's energy advice summarizes the most important tips on heating and ranks them in terms of their effectiveness.
1. Saving with the right twist
One of the most effective measures is to turn down the thermostat valve: the thermostat setting determines the room temperature. The individual levels represent the following room temperatures:
- 5 = 28°C
- 4 = 24°C
- 3 = 20°C
- 2 = 16°C
- 1 = 12°C
- * = 6°C (“frost monitor”)
- 0 = OFF (not available for all)
What's the point of wearing a sweater?
For example, if the inside temperature is 24 degrees Celsius while the outside temperature is 5 degrees Celsius on average over the heating season, there is a difference of 19 degrees Celsius.
- For example, if the temperature is reduced from 24 degrees Celsius to 20 degrees Celsius, consumption drops by around 20 percent.
Risks and side effects of turning the thermostat valve
One disadvantage is the less cozy room temperature, and the savings only occur in the room with the room turned down.
“In order to really save the corresponding proportion of the annual bill, all heated rooms would have to be heated correspondingly less throughout the entire heating season. , the energy losses, for example through the chimney, boiler and through unheated , hardly change when the room temperatures are reduced. That’s why the savings are slightly lower.”
Raymond Krieger, energy consultant for the Bremen Consumer Center
If the room humidity is high, it is essential to ventilate to prevent mold from forming: a hygrometer is advisable to be able to control the humidity. In addition, the interior doors should remain closed in rooms with different heating levels. Otherwise, the room with the highest thermostat setting will also heat the remaining rooms and the savings effect will be very small.
2. Economical heating control
The boiler control offers some options to reduce consumption:
- Set the heating times shorter: This means that the heating only occurs when someone is at home.
- To save heating energy, the flow temperature of the heating can be reduced at night or if you are away for a longer period of time during the day, or the boiler can be switched off completely.
- One final tip: lower the heating limit temperature. It determines at what outside temperature the heating starts.
What does the heating control do?
The range of savings here is large. If the heating control has already been optimized, no further savings are possible. The experience from over forty years of energy advice from the consumer advice center and over several thousand heating consultations per year show that heating systems are rarely optimized. If the heating is poorly adjusted in an uninsulated house, savings of up to 15 percent are possible.
Risks and side effects of the changed heating control
If heating times are shortened, comfort outside of these times decreases. This means: If the heating starts at 5 p.m. according to the regulations, the house may still be cool for residents who come home at 4 p.m.
