In the last few days, many consumers stormed the advice center of the Brandenburg Consumer Center (VZB) in Frankfurt (Oder) or called the service telephone in desperation.

Dubious representatives of energy providers obtain contracts on doorsteps

The municipal utilities confirmed to those affected that they had terminated their current energy contract, even though they had never given notice of termination. What they all have in common is a previous visit to the front door, during which supposed employees of the municipal utility asked for a signature on a tablet after extensive discussions with a lot of detailed knowledge.

“Don’t let people you don’t know get you involved in conversations.”

These are challenging times for consumers. The government is arguing about gas levies and other financial challenges, and many customers are currently faced with price increases, the seriousness and legality of which are not always immediately apparent to the layperson in view of the constantly changing situation. Some windy people apparently wanted to use this uncertain situation to their advantage. Posing as employees of the municipal utility, they visited numerous households in Frankfurt (Oder). Consumers should sign something on a tablet.

“According to those affected, the alleged representatives of the municipal utilities were surprisingly well informed about the existing contractual situation and were apparently able to easily gain the trust of customers of all age groups.”

Gerald Kutz, consumer advisor at the Frankfurt (Oder) advisory center

Initial evidence suggests that the customers supposedly signed a new contract with the provider Vattenfall. The people known to the VZB have not yet received anything in writing.

“Those affected generally have the opportunity to cancel a contract at their doorstep within 14 days of receiving the contract documents. You should therefore monitor your mailbox or email inbox particularly carefully in the next few days and weeks. In this case, we strongly recommend filing a criminal complaint because, as far as we know, the signature was obtained by fraud.”

In the specific cases, the VZB also sees the municipal utilities as having a duty and demands:

“Customers must be given the opportunity to return to their original contract.”
