At the moment we are looking forward to a very hot weekend, so hardly anyone is thinking about winter. But as it is with the subjective perception of temperatures: 18 degrees is a very mild summer night or a very cool apartment in winter. However, due to the reduced gas deliveries to Germany, lowering the minimum temperature in apartments is a conceivable option in order to save energy.

Germany's gas storage facilities are still 56 percent full - which is above average at the moment, but bad if it is still the same at the start of winter, because then the reserves would only last a few weeks if average consumption remained. Economics Minister Robert Habeck would therefore like to regulate energy savings legally “if necessary”.

It is unclear what such a legal regulation for energy saving should look like. It would be conceivable to lower the temperatures in administration buildings and swimming pools, and even closures would be possible, but at the same time the minimum temperature in hospitals and care facilities, for example, must be ensured.

However, Federal Construction Minister Klara Geywitz considers “legally prescribed freezing” to be nonsensical . Although Habeck has not yet looked intensively into whether lowering the minimum temperature in apartments is within the realm of possibility, Geywitz has already noted in advance that the proposal from the German Association of Cities and Municipalities could even be dangerous to health and was also too short-sighted in terms of building technology be.
