Legend and reality in heating energy. The Brandenburg Consumer Center looks at alleged energy saving miracles and classifies them.

Energy saving promise 1: An energy saving shower head quickly pays for itself

Around 15 percent of a household's energy costs go to producing hot water. Most of it is used in the household for bathing or showering. An energy-saving shower head reduces hot water consumption and actually pays for itself after a very short time.

“Depending on the model and water pressure, a shower saving head can reduce the flow rate by half without any loss of comfort and thus save up to 300 euros per year.”

Joshua Jahn from the Brandenburg Consumer Center

Economical shower heads use five to seven liters of water per minute. With conventional shower heads, around ten to 15 liters of water flow per minute and with wellness or rain showers even up to 20 liters of water per minute.

Energy saving promise 2: Chemical additives in heating water save energy

Manufacturers of additives or liquids that are intended to completely replace heating water sometimes promise enormous energy savings.

“In the vast majority of heating systems, chemical additives or replacement fluids are unnecessary, and they do not save energy.”

Joshua Jahn from the Brandenburg Consumer Center

It is not uncommon for such miracle cures to be expensive. A single-family home usually has to expect a four-digit amount to replace its heating fluid. And that with doubtful benefits. Much more effective are lowering the flow temperature, good thermal insulation of the heating pipes or carrying out hydraulic balancing.

Energy saving promise 3: Energy-saving wall paint reduces heating costs

In advertising, manufacturers of special paints repeatedly promise that consumers can save heating energy thanks to their products. While subsequent thermal insulation usually involves extensive renovation, energy-saving paints promise thermal protection at significantly lower prices. However, the thickness of the insulation and the thermal conductivity of the material are decisive for the effectiveness of thermal insulation. Since a coat of paint is a few millimeters thick, the insulation paint has only a very limited influence on heat and cold protection.

“A noticeable saving effect through a coat of paint alone is therefore impossible.”

Joshua Jahn from the Brandenburg Consumer Center

In order to really reduce the heating energy requirement, subsequent insulation is required.
