The lines on Facebook sound dramatic: “+++ISLAMIST knife attack in Erfurt am Nordbad +++ +++ Please share! +++ ALLAHU AKBAR”

But what really happened in Erfurt? A widely shared status message on Facebook reports an Islamist attack. So you read in the status report, which uses very tendentious framing terms, that a “guest® of the trafficker queen (note: meant Merkel) was prevented from STABING a young girl!” [sic!]. There is talk of crimes against the German people and the time to finally wake up.

The status report is illustrated with several images depicting a police operation in Erfurt's Nordbad. These photos are not fake and can easily be assigned to the Nordbad. The police have now published a press release that, on the one hand, describes the facts in some points without using judgmental terms, and on the other hand, it deviates from the strongly tendentious description on Facebook and in parts takes up and contradicts it:

Police operation in Erfurt's Nordpark

The police published: There was an argument early in the evening yesterday in Erfurt's Nordpark between a 23-year-old German and a 20-year-old man with Turkish citizenship. A weapon is said to have been used during the physical altercation. Both men were slightly injured. On social networks on the Internet there are reports of an Islamist knife attack with the supposed exclamation “Allahu Akbar”.

According to the current status of the police investigation, there is no evidence of an Islamist background to the crime. The 20-year-old man was arrested by the police. The Erfurt public prosecutor's office is currently examining the application for an arrest warrant against the man for dangerous bodily harm. (JN)

Even harsher words on Facebook!

The police are even talking about fake news about this case on Facebook. We reflect:

+++ Deployment at Nordbad Erfurt +++

Fake news about the police operation on social media

There was an altercation early yesterday evening in Erfurt's Nordpark between a 23-year-old German and a 20-year-old man with Turkish citizenship. A weapon is said to have been used during this altercation. Both men were slightly injured.

We have determined that the incident was misused on social media for false reporting.

___ Fake News ___
Among other things, relevant sites talk about an “Islamist knife attack” with the supposed exclamation “Allahu Akbar” against a young woman. Photos were distributed that were allegedly taken by an eyewitness to the crime.

___ Our investigations ___
We can neither confirm the exclamation nor any other Islamist background. We also currently have no information regarding the claim that a young woman was attacked with the weapon.

The 20-year-old man was arrested. The public prosecutor's office is currently examining the application for an arrest warrant against the man for grievous bodily harm.

▶️ This situation is once again a clear example of how facts in relevant media are commented on and misused in an unobjective and tendentious manner in order to generate a new perceived truth that confirms the worldview of interested readers and generates clicks. The virality of such colored information, further pushed by the algorithms of social media, ensures a massive reach and lightning-fast distribution on the Internet.

▶️ We would like to ask you to obtain information from reputable sources, to compare sources with each other and to question information. The flood of fake news on Facebook and Co. is unmanageable. We always try to provide information quickly with verified information from trustworthy sources and would be happy if even more readers would appreciate the need for factually correct journalistic work.
