The bizarre news: Yes, it was actually two barrels of beer that represented the first freight transport on a train in Germany.

Beer on the train: We know about a lot of historical things that had a premiere at some point. Just as, for example, the Bible was the first book in Gutenberg's printing press ( compare ).

But few people know what the first freight transport on a train in Germany consisted of. Well, it was two barrels of beer! But now between us, what else?

However, this transport should not be imagined as a freight trailer or similar transport device. It was actually a very unexciting transport, as you can find out on the website Nürnberginfos.de.

The beer as a “passenger”

On the corresponding website you can read that these 2 beer kegs were normally placed in a 3rd class passenger car on a train. This first freight transport took place on June 11, 1836, there wasn't even a locomotive ( the Adler ) in front of it, but rather there were horses pulling the wagon. This wasn't the eagle's first flight either.

“The beer brewer Mr. Lederer is allowed to send two kegs of beer to the innkeeper on the railway with the first wagon going to Fürth in return for compensation of six kreuzers per keg for transport wages, on the condition that this is paid each time by the innkeeper when the wagon arrives be removed immediately. The Directorial Commissioner Dr. Löhner is therefore commissioned to ensure that this small beginning of the transport of goods takes place in proper order, so that it can perhaps later be expanded into a larger scale. Since the transport of people to Fürth is not numerous anyway, this will be easier to carry out.”
