Are Google and Facebook really abusing their market power?
An EU Commission is entrusted with this investigation. Competitors should comment on this and answer numerous questions for the authority.
How does Google collect data and make money from it?
EU competition watchdogs are analyzing the benefits of the large amounts of data collected by Google and Facebook. Questions such as how the two companies collect their data, whether this restricts competition, and how valuable such surveys are on the Internet are discussed here.
Richard Stables, head of the price comparison site Kelkoo, speaks of a frightening amount of data. He fears that the EU Commission does not know how extensive Google's data collection via the Internet is and would be shocked by it.

According to Google, it uses the data to optimize its services. Users are free to manage, delete or transfer their data at any time.
Questionnaires sent to competitors
“The Commission sent questionnaires as part of a preliminary investigation into Google's practices regarding its collection and use of data. The preliminary investigation is still ongoing,” the EU regulator said, according to the Reuters news agency.
Data related to local search services, online advertising, registration services and other topics are the focus of the questionnaires, which must be answered by January 7th.
Facebook's competitors also receive questions. The EU Commission would like to use the answers to find out how Facebook collects data. Partners and competitors of the social network are asked to state why they share data with Facebook and how significant this data is.
Complaint letter from 41 price comparison portals
EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice President and Commissioner for Digital since December, received a letter from 41 price comparison portals. In this, the competitors complain about Google's handling or abuse of its market power in the “Shopping” area for product searches and price comparisons. Authors of the letter – including Idealo, billiger.de and Ladenzeile.de – demand that “Google finally be put in its place”.
