A call about an unexpected win naturally sounds desirable at first, but unfortunately such calls quickly turn out to be pure rip-offs. Criminals are currently trying to pose as Eurojackpot and are contacting potential victims, particularly by telephone. If you also receive such a call, we advise you to break off contact immediately.

Data access and advance payment

As part of the fraudulent calls for an alleged profit, the criminals primarily target personal data. Address details, date of birth or bank account information are often requested in order to transfer the supposed winnings. On the one hand, this creates the impression of legitimacy, but on the other hand, the data could be used for subsequent fraud.

In addition to the personal data, the criminals try to get advance payments out of you through further calls or messages. You may be asked to make bank transfers or to make payments via online transfer services. No matter which option applies to your case: paying in advance to receive a prize is dubious!

Therefore: Don't pay anything! Your money ends up in the hands of criminals and there is no profit.

How do you recognize attempted fraud?

There are numerous clues to the fraud:

  • Have you played in the lottery? If the answer to this question is “No”, then a notification of winning should be ignored - regardless of whether it comes to you by telephone, post, email or via social media.
  • Have you provided contact details? If you have only filled out winning numbers or a lottery ticket but have not provided any details, then no one from the lottery can contact you.
  • Have your numbers been drawn? If your numbers were actually drawn in a lottery, you are generally responsible for contacting the lottery yourself.
  • Should you pay fees in advance? Then it is definitely a scam.

Have you been the victim of a fraudulent winning notification?

If you have fallen victim to such a scam, we recommend that you contact your bank immediately. On the one hand, you can discuss with the bank employees what data you have provided and whether it is necessary to block your account. On the other hand, in the case of a transfer, you can try to have the money returned. Unfortunately, the probability of success is very low.

In addition, we recommend filing a police report in the event of financial damage.
