In principle, the legislature provides for a 14-day right of withdrawal for contracts concluded outside of business premises and via distance selling. But there are also exceptions that consumers should be aware of.

The ulterior motive is consumer protection

Distance selling means that the purchase or other contract is concluded over the telephone or on the Internet - such as when shopping online or ordering from catalogs. Contracts concluded outside of business premises also include “door-to-door transactions” or “coffee trips”. Since you cannot check, feel or measure the goods in advance with these purchases and contracts, the legislature grants the right of withdrawal.

"But even here there are exceptions. For example, there is no right of withdrawal for custom-made goods, for the delivery of groceries, for tickets for concerts, sporting events, etc. purchased online, or for booking flights, hotels or complete package tours online.”

No revocation if check is possible

There is no legal right of withdrawal for contracts concluded directly in the store. Here, consumers have enough time to think about concluding the contract and to inspect the goods before purchasing.

“Under no circumstances should you rush to buy goods in the store without checking them thoroughly first or hastily conclude other contracts – such as a mobile phone contract.”
