The claim
In a short video that went viral, journalist Ana Kasparian complains about Christian abortion opponents. The impression arises that it refers to the current ruling in the USA.
Our conclusion
The video was from 2018. It referred to demands from religious people, especially fundamental Christians, in the USA.
The excitement surrounding the repeal of Roe v. The Wade verdict in the USA will certainly not go away for a long time. A few days ago, the US Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 ruling that stated that unreasonably restrictive state regulation of abortion is unconstitutional.
With the hashtag #RoeVsWade, a video of a journalist complaining about Christian abortion opponents is now spreading, particularly on Twitter, but the video is not currently related to this overturning of the verdict.
The video
The video is 1:18 minutes long. In it, journalist Ana Kasparian complains that she doesn't want to let Christian fundamentalists dictate how she should deal with her body.
She says, among other things: “ All these women who identify with your religion have every right in the world not to have an abortion and not to use contraceptives. But they don’t have the right to dictate my life and decide what I want to do with my body .”
The origin of the video
From the above sentence, but also from the entire video, it is already clear that some things have nothing to do with the current annulment of the almost 50-year-old landmark ruling: Kasparian speaks directly about the Christian religion and about Christian women, but the annulment of the verdict was not based on Christian principles, but on the fact that the US Constitution does not provide a right to abortion .
Of course, fundamental Christians in the USA are particularly happy about the verdict. “The Guardian” devoted a very detailed article to the issue of the Christian right exerting too much influence on legislation (see HERE ). Nevertheless, with a current video it would make more sense to complain about the Supreme Court, which also overturned the ruling.
There is a good reason why Ana Kasparian speaks directly about Christians: The video is from November 2018.
At that time, many religious people, especially Christians, in the USA called for a change in legislation. In 2021, the video spread again, confusing Kasparian herself until she discovered that new legislation in Poland also restricted women's rights to abortion.
Conclusion
The video does not show the journalist's emotional reaction to the current ruling by the US Supreme Court, but rather referred to demands from religious people, especially fundamental Christians, in the US.
