According to the draft law, Facebook, Google and Co should be held more accountable!

Brussels: On September 12, 2018, the European Commission presented a draft law that gives Google, Facebook, Twitter and other large Internet companies one hour to remove extremist content - otherwise they face high fines.

Immediate deletion as the goal

The Commission warned numerous social networks back in March this year that they had three months to show they were quickly removing extremist content. Otherwise, new laws forcing them to do so would be considered. The European Commission is now taking this step.

Brussels wants content that incites extremist crimes or advocates promoting or depicting extremist groups and supporting such acts to be removed from the internet within an hour of receiving a request to do so from national authorities. The proposal, which must be supported by EU countries and the European Parliament, also requires internet platforms to also take proactive measures - such as developing new tools against abuse and introducing human review of content.

Clear guide for providers

Service providers will also be required to submit annual transparency reports under the new law to demonstrate their efforts to combat abuse. Those who systematically fail to remove extremist content could face fines of up to four percent of annual global revenue. The draft also calls on national governments to identify extremist content online, impose sanctions and initiate appeals processes. Source: pte
