A joint project by Facebook, Cultural Projects Berlin and ZDF Digital!

30 years of the fall of the Berlin Wall: experience history up close with a total of 38 augmented reality filters. On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Facebook, together with Kulturprojekte Berlin and ZDF Digital, is offering a new look at untold stories surrounding this historic event that are largely unknown to the public. More than 30 augmented reality filters (AR filters) were developed especially for the anniversary to focus on the stories and people who made the fall of the Berlin Wall possible. The filters are available throughout Germany from November 4th to 10th, 2019 and give the festival “ 30 Years of Peaceful Revolution – Fall of the Wall ” an additional perspective.

With the different AR filters, people can participate in the fall of the Berlin Wall in an innovative way in Berlin and beyond the city's borders. You can use Facebook to celebrate the historic event with others, recall stories that contributed to the fall of the Berlin Wall, and draw attention to what we can achieve together. Eight of the 38 filters come from Sehsucht, a production partner of ZDF Digital, and another 30 from ZDF Digital. Anyone who would like to try out the filters can access the QR codes chatbot in Facebook Messenger

AR filters bring well-known places in Berlin to life

East Side Gallery:
The art in the East Side Gallery documents a time of change and expresses euphoria and high hopes for a better future. Using augmented reality, some of the most prominent sections, such as a Trabi breaking through the wall, are brought back to life, allowing people to experience the East Side Gallery and its artworks in an immersive way.

Alexanderplatz:
On November 4, 1989, 500,000 people met at Alexanderplatz to demonstrate. Every single person who gathered here that day helped bring down the wall. The AR effect honors the peaceful protest with a virtual statue.

Gethsemane Church:
In peaceful protest, people lit candles in front of the Gethsemane Church. With the help of augmented reality, you are transported back to that time, see hundreds of candles floating in the air and have the opportunity to light a candle too.

Instructions for using the filters

People can access the AR filters in two ways:
The @Mauerfall30 chatbot on Facebook Messenger provides background information on the previously untold stories surrounding the fall of the Wall as well as a map with an overview of the locations where the filters are used can be.

Step by step:

1. The user opens a conversation with @mauerfall30 .
2. The messenger bot sends an overview map with all locations.
3. The user selects the location they want to visit (and can also choose whether they want to receive directions).
4. The Messenger bot asks if the user has arrived at the location.
If the user confirms this, the AR filter can be opened. 5. In the filter the user will find brief instructions on how to use it.

Stickers with QR codes have been placed at seven original locations of the Peaceful Revolution as part of the festival week “30 Years of the Peaceful Revolution – Fall of the Wall” by Kulturprojekte Berlin. Scanning the QR code opens a 3D photo with a previously untold story from back then as well as additional information.
